I agree with Roy here Dai, kind of a sappy page. Drake looks better in his hood though, so that makes me happy. *glee!* How goes your summer? I saw Cody and Matt O. at the Acalanes graduation, I was happy to see them.
YEah, I dunno if the battlefield rant is "emo" or "sappy", but it does seem to spring out of nowhere. Why is Drake thinking of previous traumas at a time like this? More importantly, why is he discussing them with a stranger at a time like this? Also, the text phrasing seems kinda awkward in some places, and Drake's face in the last panel looks quite strange.
yes, the art is off, I was rushing to get the page finished in time. I don't have access to my photoshop archives from wher I am, but I'll try to fix it up when I get home.
Out of all my characters, Drake is the one with the most developed backstory and motivation. Everything he does he does for a reason. I haven't gotten a chance to fully develop his character yet, so many of his actions won't make sense for a while, but here is a quick justification based on what we know about him now:
He fought in the Shadows War. The Shadows war was a very nasty conflict. Surrender was out of the question for either side, so soldiers fought to the death. Also, as times got more despirate, they resorted to more and more unorthodox weaponry, especialy since each side saw the other as inferior, and did not balk at using horrific weapons. Shadows War = scary and bad. Earlier Drake showed some regret about the part he played in it, but stuck to him craptastic neuremburg defense that he was just following his duty.
Why is he thinking of it now? Out of all the senses, smell is the one with the strongest connection to memory. The blood's going to call up memories of the war. The smell's also gonna unbalance him, and make him even more prone to emotional see-sawing that he usualy is.
Why is he talking about it to Fitz's Dad? part of it is just rambling as he tries to come to a decision about helping them. Also, Fir'z dad is wearing an old military uniform. Drake's time in the military was a big part of his life, so having that in common is a big deal to him. Fitz's dad has been perfectly nice to him, and Drake is capable of returning the favor, think of how he behaved around Amy and Mrs Bochevam earlier.
He's not going to go emo. I have a low tolleranace for angst, and Drake has a very unbalanced personality, so he;s going to emotionaly bounce all over the place.
I realise that you'd need a better understanding of drake to come up with most of this, but the problem with comics is that it takes a long time to get anywhere. I can't change the way he bevahes based on what you know, so just have faith that I know what I'm doing.
O.o Well, I certainly didn't see anything odd about it...from what I knew of Drake before, he's very unstable and seems prone to any number of reactions. This didn't surprise me at all.
I love the last three panels. The beats were just spot-on, and you just know that something's going through his head (even if you can't rightly know what it is). I love the quick glimpse of his cursed marking--it's almost foreshadowing. ^-^ Hope I'm right!
Oops! By golly no! I didn't mean that it didn't make sense, I just mean that, well, sapiness and me have a bad history. Involving much tearing of hair and murdering of spouses. In the end, we just don't like to meet face to face.
