And Joan addresses the elephant in the room.

Stories with "friendly" vampires always have some sort of non predatory feeding method for them. With modern settings its usually raiding a blood bank or something. That doesn't really work with this setting, and I never liked that approach because there's a blood shortage, so they're still hurting people by using up vital medical supplies. I'll be interested to see what you think of Mina's system.

I'd also like to hear what you guys think of Mina. what sort of impression has she made so far?

I qued up this update before going on vacation, so no replies until I get back (sorry!)

I like to think that maybe they'd have a dedicated donor or something, and some of the vegetarian vamps would feed from animals (obviously), but the more pacifist would maybe just drain like a gallon of chicken blood (have you SEEN how much blood those little birds have?!)

Well she is a vampire after all

Volunteers, is probably the best bet here. Humans who volunteer themselves to be drained, per requirement. And it might not always be the same person.

I've always disliked how people villainize human-blood drinking vamps, because it's 'unethical'. Humans are to Vampires, what Cows and Pigs are to Humans. The only saving grace, is the ability to ask permission before you do so.

Also, mind control. But these things happen.

feels like the whole blood bank concept to me.

Aylis: -Shudders- I can't imagine being a donor. Doesn't being fed from HURT? I don't do well with pain, but if there was no pain... I could probably do that for them. Maybe. If they wouldn't burst into flames from my blood.

Me: Ignore him, he's delirious. >> I think that would be a decent idea, though. Different donors, and you only take a small bit from each so you don't kill them, and still get a good meal. Like.... oh, maybe 50 or so humans? Willing, of course. Maybe they get something out of it too? Protection? Horses? Supplies? Maybe even companionship.

I love Mina so far. She's quite impressive, which makes sense given who her subjects are.

I am curious to see how the system works. Based on what I've seen of Mina so far, it's probably a very effective and sustainable system. Sustainable in the fact that humans don't die.

Given that she's a doctor at heart still, it's also certainly ethical (to a degree)...

Even though it has been established that Mina is safe it was still very brave of Joan to ask that. She's squeezing her arm pretty hard in that last panel.

I'm always curious about what systems friendly vampires use to get blood. I mean, animal blood feels like a cop out to me. Blood + used Haji giving Saya blood once she stopped affiliating herself with Red Shield, which works because as her Chevalier, he was capable of regenerating blood as fast as she could drink as long as she was careful (and Haji had the choice of "starving" and suffering rather minimal consequences). I'm curious what Mina's actually is going to be...

As for Mina herself, I like her. As a general rule, an easy way into my approval is women in leadership positions. :P But she also seems like she's going to fit alot of my favorite character archetypes. So squee.

Checked it today to see that... this comic is 10 years old? It seems so much shorter in retrospect.
